As part of the Indian Military services, the Indian Air Force has the responsibility for the aerial welfare of the country. The main responsibility of the IAF is to protect Indian airspace and indulge in aerial welfare during conflicts. Also, the IAF comprises the three 3 armed forces wings of India; the other two are the Indian Navy and Indian Army.

The date of establishment of the IAF is recorded to be 8th October 1932 and was commissioned under the British Empire as an auxiliary force. For recognizing the services of the IAF during World War II, the prefix ‘Royal’ was affixed to the force in the year 1945. Then, later on, during the year 1950, after India achieved independence from British domination and became a republic country, the prefix was dropped. Since then, the IAF serves the Dominion of India.

The IAF offers positions in both their technical and non-technical branches. IAF officers receive training for managing, leading, and strategizing forces.  Also, aspirants who are interested in technical support roles are invited to apply if they satisfy the prescribed eligibility norms.

The IAF examiners conduct a series of screening rounds to select candidates, who are given training. Subsequently, they are commissioned as officers and given postings at the various IAF stations.

Under IAF jobs, the aspirants can join as Officers in varied branches as per their educational background. These branches include ground duty, technical, and flying ones. The sub-streams of these three branches are further sub-divided as seen below.

(a) Flying Branch

In this category, the various posts include helicopter, transport and fighter pilots. Both men and women can qualify for these positions after completing graduation. Further, they have to appear for various exams. These include the NCC special entry (for males), AFCAT (for both men and women), and CDS (only for men).

More so, upon completion of 10+2, the applicants qualify for National Defence Academy (NDA) or Naval Academy (NA) examinations that are relevant for recruitments under this branch.

(b) Technical Branch

The technical branch has positions in the Electronics and Mechanical departments. To qualify for the stipulated positions, the candidates have to clear AFCAT or qualify via the University Entry Scheme (UES).

(c) Ground Duty Branch

Under the Ground Duty branch, the IAF has positions in different departments – including Meteorology, Education, Logistics, Accounts, Administration, among others. The aspiring candidates have to qualify AFCAT to avail positions in these sections.

As per the educational qualifications of the candidates, they can join the IAF in varied positions.

Opportunities for 10+2 Candidates

After clearing 10+2 exams in the Science stream, young boys can apply for IAF officer positions. However, they should have studied Maths and Physics subjects. The eligible candidates must, further, appear for the NA and NDA exams that the UPSC conducts across various centers in the different Indian states.

The selected candidates are, then, given 3-year training at NDA that is located at Khadakwasla in Pune city. After training, the cadets are offered Officer/Pilot position at IAF locations.

Opportunities for Graduates

After completing graduation, men and women can join the IAF as Officers. To qualify, they have to give the AFCAT exam. Then, they are shortlisted as per their performance in the exams and other screening rounds. Next, they receive training and are, then, deployed as Officers at IAF stations.

Opportunities for Engineering Graduates

Engineers can join the IAF in different positions as well. After acquiring their engineering degrees, they have to apply for CDS and AFCAT exams and qualify. Then, they undergo training at the IAF training centers, after which they become Officers and are given postings.

Engineering graduates can, also, join the IAF Technical branch during the pre-final and final years of engineering via the UES.

Opportunities after Post Graduation

Postgraduates can avail Ground Duty positions with the IAF. Even so, they are required to qualify AFCAT and the subsequent selection rounds for availing these posts.

Indian Air Force Jobs: Airman Positions

Indian Air Force airmen are responsible for running air and group operations within the country and smoothly. They are trained to operate air defence resources. And, in turn, they provide support to different missions during warfare.

The varied positions in the IAF under technical and non-technical trades are offered as per the educational qualification of the candidates. Opportunities for having a career with IAF are open to candidates who are graduates, postgraduates, and diploma holders. Also, the candidates who have cleared their 10th or 12th standard examinations are eligible to apply.

To notify IAF aspirants, the Ministry of Defence that functions under the Government of India releases notifications via newspapers and the official website, https://indianairforce.nic.in/.

The interested parties have to forward their applications for the positions they want to apply to. First, they should read the notifications. Then, to apply to any of the given vacancies, they have to study the prescribed eligibility requirements. Upon meeting the norms, they have to forward their applications in the prescribed format and before the deadline expiry.

Then, after the screening of candidates’ applications, the eligible applicants are invited for the different screening rounds. Going by their overall performance, they are awarded positions with the IAF and have to undergo training before their appointments.
